Thompson Hine Strengthens National Real Estate Platform with Cross-Border Private Equity Real Estate Partner Matthew Alshouse in Chicago

Thompson Hine LLP

Thompson Hine LLP a national law firm acclaimed for its innovative approach to client service, announced that Matt Alshouse has joined the firm’s Chicago office as a partner in its Real Estate practice. Alshouse, formerly a partner with DLA Piper, focuses on private equity real estate and cross-border transactions, particularly inbound investments by Korean asset managers, further deepening the firm’s capabilities to represent real estate sponsors, lenders and institutional investors, both nationwide and internationally.

Alshouse’s addition continues the firm’s strategic growth of its coast-to-coast platform, following recent expansions in Los Angeles with real estate partner Bill Ticknor and construction partner Mike Viayra. Together, these moves broaden the firm’s bench across capital markets, real estate development, construction and finance.

“Matt is a highly sophisticated deal lawyer with an exceptional track record on complex portfolio transactions, fund-level facilities and cross-border investments,” said Tom Coyne, Real Estate practice group leader. “His deep relationships with global private equity sponsors and Korean asset managers, combined with significant experience across the capital stack, aligns very well with our strategy to grow a premier national real estate platform anchored in the major markets.”

Alshouse has significant experience in fund-level financing, infrastructure, and the development and financing of major projects.  He has counseled domestic and foreign private equity and hedge funds, investor consortia, developers, asset-based and project lenders, and REITs on a broad range of property acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and mortgage and mezzanine loans. Alshouse also has extensive experience representing sponsors in subscription-based credit facilities and counseling large private equity funds on secondary market portfolio acquisitions and leverage.

Alshouse’s recent experience includes representing a variety of Korean asset managers and other investor consortia in their U.S. real estate transactions, including hard asset acquisitions, dispositions and joint ventures, as well as representing borrowers in mortgage and mezzanine loans, the acquisition of mortgage and mezzanine debt from institutional bank sponsors, and the issuance and origination of mortgage and mezzanine loans secured by U.S. properties.

He has represented leading Korean institutional investors in complex U.S. real estate transactions, including the acquisition, financing, refinancing and disposition of marquee office assets in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Seattle; multiple joint ventures for the development of logistics facility portfolios; and the acquisition and financing of e-commerce fulfillment and parcel distribution centers across Illinois, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, Texas and California, including a construction joint venture with a national industrial developer. He also advised Korean investor groups on the acquisition, origination and repositioning of more than $3 billion in mortgage and mezzanine debt, demonstrating deep cross-border execution capability, sophisticated capital stack structuring and national market coverage.

Alshouse’s Korean expertise dovetails well with cross-border litigator Mitchell Kim, who recently joined the Los Angeles office. Kim also has developed a significant Korea-focused practice, advising both domestic and international clients on complex disputes involving contract, securities, corporate ownership, partnership, asset distribution and intellectual property matters.

“Thompson Hine’s collaborative culture, national reach and commitment to innovation provide the ideal platform to scale a cross-border private equity real estate practice,” Alshouse said. “I’m excited to help build the firm’s Chicago real estate presence, expand inbound investment work and deliver efficient, business-aligned solutions to clients.”

Alshouse’s practice complements Thompson Hine’s strengths in real estate capital markets, construction, investment management, tax and environmental counseling. The firm’s integrated platform and SmartPaTH initiatives will support continued growth in Chicago and nationally, offering clients predictable, tech-enabled service delivery across the full life cycle of real estate investments and developments.

“Matt brings the exact blend of market credibility, trusted client relationships, and deal execution we value as we continue to scale our Chicago office,” said Jonathon Vinocur, partner in charge of the Chicago office. “His arrival underscores our strategy to attract more talent with his profile—strong, market-leading, well-rounded practitioners across key disciplines—to deliver the firm’s full-service capabilities to the Chicago business community and beyond.”
