Thompson Hine Named Finalist for Two Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards – Innovation in AI Strategy and Innovation in New Legal Products

Thompson Hine LLP

Thompson Hine LLP, a national law firm recognized for innovation in legal service delivery, announced today that it has been named a finalist in two categories in the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards North America. The firm is shortlisted in the Innovation in AI Strategy category for its firmwide generative AI professional development initiative and in the Innovation in New Legal Products category for its “Fund in a Box” solution.

Now in its 20th year, the Innovative Lawyers Awards program celebrates leaders in digital innovation across more than 15 categories. Financial Times assesses legal innovations submitted by law firms and in-house teams through interviews, questionnaires, and reviews. Each entry is scored for originality, leadership, and impact, then benchmarked to determine final rankings and award shortlists.

Innovation in AI Strategy: Thompson Hine’s Generative AI Enhances Professional Development and Collaborative Innovation

Financial Times recognized Thompson Hine’s creation of a fully integrated structure for the continuing development of generative AI-boosted bespoke solutions for its legal and business teams to improve the quality and efficiency of its client service, create new revenue streams, and honor the firm’s rich history and culture of purposeful experimentation, collaborative discovery, and innovation.

The initiative emphasizes process as much as technology: ongoing, consistent training; team-based problem solving; and a structured path from idea to scaled workflow. One of the initiative’s key components was a “Design Sprint” that brought together lawyers, summer associates, and administrative leaders to identify high-impact use cases and build working prototypes aimed at improving legal service delivery. In its initial phase, the program produced more than a dozen unique workflow prototypes spanning research and drafting, transactional execution, and knowledge captures, several of which have advanced into next-stage development. By embedding AI fluency into daily operations and adopting a collaborative, design-driven approach, Thompson Hine accelerates creativity, capability, efficiency, and transparency for clients.

Innovation in New Legal Products: Thompson Hine Democratizes Corporate Innovation with Its “Fund in a Box”

Thompson Hine’s “Fund in a Box” is a technology-enabled toolset that streamlines the end-to-end legal process for launching and documenting emerging investment funds. The approach gives first-time and emerging fund managers a clear, step-by-step pathway to establish the right vehicle, assemble compliant fundraising materials, structure and negotiate fund documents, onboard investors, and complete required securities filings – all mapped to an itemized budget and timeline.

By combining proprietary resources, market-calibrated templates, and AI-enabled workflows, the “Fund in a Box” solution demystifies the formation journey and creates a transparent, staged process that aligns legal deliverables to the client’s fundraising milestones. The result is a meaningfully accelerated and more predictable formation experience at substantially lower cost than traditional models. In typical scenarios, Thompson Hine’s approach reduces average launch costs to about a third of market norms and compresses timelines from several weeks to approximately a week and a half for standard fund structures. This innovation expands access to capital formation by allowing emerging fund managers to validate investor interest earlier and invest legal spend only as a fund progresses, effectively lowering barriers to entry and empowering a more diverse set of fund sponsors.

These recognitions build on Thompson Hine’s long-standing track record of reimagining how legal services are designed and delivered. The firm has been recognized many times by Financial Times, starting ten years ago when it was ranked number 1 in “Most innovative North American law firms 2015: New working models” for its innovation in developing SmartPaTHTM, a service delivery model that incorporates project management, value-based billing, flexible staffing, and process efficiency. Thompson Hine created SmartPaTH to respond to clients seeking significant changes in the way their law firms work with them.
