Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce that William Ticknor has joined the firm’s Real Estate practice group as a partner in its Los Angeles office. Ticknor brings with him a wealth of experience in sophisticated commercial real estate transactions and a robust client base of developers and institutional investors. He joins Thompson Hine from Troutman Pepper Locke LLP.
Tom Coyne, chair of the firm’s national Real Estate Group, commented: “Bill will be of particular value to our many clients who have significant real estate assets in California, as this is a key market for some of our largest clients.”
Ticknor’s decision to join Thompson Hine was driven by the firm’s integrated approach to client service and its commitment to supporting the continued growth of his practice. “I was seeking a firm that values collaboration and is well positioned to support the complex needs of my developer and institutional investor clients,” said Ticknor. “Thompson Hine’s culture and platform are a perfect fit for my practice, and I look forward to contributing to the firm’s continued success in Los Angeles and beyond.”
With more than two decades of experience, Ticknor focuses his practice on real estate acquisitions, dispositions, and finance, including the negotiation of single- and multi-asset portfolios; traditional acquisition and construction loans; refinancings; loan assumptions; defeasances; workouts; syndicated, participating, and securitized loans; mezzanine financings; and preferred equity. He serves as counsel to real estate funds, developers, high-net-worth individuals, and institutional and non-institutional investors.
Ticknor advises on transactions and financing for a wide range of commercial property types, including industrial buildings, luxury hotels and resorts, commercial office buildings, shopping centers, parking garages, self-storage facilities, student housing, and multifamily apartments. He has facilitated the acquisition and financing of large-scale industrial portfolios, creative office and retail developments, multifamily projects valued at over $850 million, and trophy assets throughout California and the United States.
“Hiring a real estate partner with a robust practice has been a top priority for our Los Angeles office,” said John Conkle, office partner in charge in Los Angeles. “Bill’s depth and breadth of experience, combined with his collaborative approach and strong client relationships, make him an ideal anchor for our real estate practice in Southern California.”
Ticknor is recognized for his leadership in the industry, including his service as chair of the Union Station Homeless Services Housing Innovation Committee. He is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® for Real Estate Law (2024-2025).
The recent addition of Bill Ticknor, following the significant addition of construction partner Mike Viayra—who joined the Los Angeles office in March, bringing nearly 30 years of experience in engineering and law—further underscores the firm’s commitment to expanding its real estate capabilities in Los Angeles and strengthening its presence in the region. Viayra represents construction and energy clients in complex litigation and transactional matters across California and federal courts, as well as alternative dispute resolution forums. His unique background—combining engineering expertise, military service, and in-house counsel experience at a Fortune 100 company—provides him with a distinctive perspective to address clients’ needs.
Thompson Hine, with roots in the Midwest, opened its Los Angeles office in 2024 as part of its strategic plan to establish a West Coast presence to better serve the firm’s growing client base in California and augment its litigation practice. The firm is committed to delivering top-tier legal services and innovative solutions to its clients.
