Thompson Hine Partner Receives ATHENA Award

Thompson Hine partner Deborah Z. Read is the Cleveland winner of the 2010 Northeast Ohio ATHENA Award. Presented annually by Inside Business magazine since 2003, the award honors an individual who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in his or her business or profession; provides valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community; and actively assists women in realizing their full leadership potential. The award is administered by ATHENA International in Chicago.

Read, one of nine members of the firm's Executive Committee, previously served as chair of the Tax, Benefits and Planning department and formerly chaired the Lawyer Personnel Committee, a firmwide committee responsible for career development for all non-partner lawyers. She has also been very supportive of the formation and operation of the Spotlight on Women? program, Thompson Hine's award-winning women's initiative.
Read practices tax and health care law, functioning as outside general counsel to two large exempt organizations. She focuses her tax practice on tax and corporate planning for nonprofit organizations, foundations and health care organizations. She also advises organizations on nonprofit corporate law issues and nonprofit boards on fiduciary duty issues. She counsels tax-exempt operating entities on contractual relationships, corporate planning, acquisitions and legal structures for affiliations, ventures and other business arrangements. Read is an active member of the District of Columbia and Ohio bars.
In addition being honored with the ATHENA Award, Read is the recipient of a number of other prestigious awards, including the 2006 YWCA Career Women of Achievement, the 2006 Rainmakers Award (Northern Ohio Live), the 2001 Kaleidoscope Magazine Woman Who Gives Back Award and the United Way Volunteer of the Year award in 1988. She is a board member and on the finance committee of the Playhouse Square Foundation, a board member and officer of The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, an executive committee member of the Community Vision Council and a member of the board of directors, the executive committee and the nominating committee of United Way.
