Thompson Hine First Law Firm to Receive LLI Volunteer Award

Firm Recognized for Supporting Internship Program

Date: June 21, 2011

Thompson Hine LLP has been selected by the Law and Leadership Institute (LLI) as the first law firm to receive its Law Firm Volunteer Award. The award recognizes the firm for its commitment to and support of LLI's internship program for urban high school students interested in law careers.

Thompson Hine annually hosts high school students participating in the LLI program as summer interns in its four Ohio offices. The four-day internship gives students a taste of what it's like to practice law in a large corporate firm.

"It's a great honor for us to receive this award," said Robyn Minter Smyers, chair of Thompson Hine's Diversity & Inclusion Initiative. "Thompson Hine is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion within our firm, the legal profession and our communities. As part of our commitment, we recognize the importance of championing and participating in programs that facilitate continued diversity in the legal profession. LLI ignites students' excitement about and passion for law careers, and we're proud to be a partner in its efforts."

David J. Hooker, the firm's managing partner, said, "I am proud of our Diversity & Inclusion Initiative's efforts to elevate awareness of the value of diversity in the legal community. We understand how important it is to our profession that tomorrow's lawyers are drawn from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of experiences and viewpoints to the practice of law."

Founded in 2008, LLI is a collaborative pipeline expansion program involving all nine Ohio law schools, the Ohio State Bar Association, Supreme Court of Ohio and Ohio Center for Law-Related Education, with support from the Ohio State Bar Foundation and Charles F. Kettering Foundation. The program is designed to equip students from underserved urban high schools with the skills and encouragement they need to succeed in college and law school and, ultimately, to increase the diversity of the legal profession and foster future leaders.
