Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce that Athavan “Otto” Balendran, a rising 3L at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, received the firm’s 2021 2L Diversity Scholarship. Balendran, who recently completed Thompson Hine’s summer program in its Cleveland office, has a true passion for litigation and trial advocacy. He currently is vice president of the Jonathan M. Ault Mock Trial Team at CWRU School of Law and coaches the undergraduate mock trial team.

Recipients of Thompson Hine’s 2L Diversity Scholarship must demonstrate leadership ability, excellent writing and interpersonal skills, academic achievement and a commitment to diversity. In addition, this year’s applicants had to submit a personal statement describing how their background and experience could help advance the firm’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

Thompson Hine is proud to report that 100% of its 2021 summer program class, which consisted of four 2Ls and four 1Ls, self-identified as racially diverse and/or LGBTQ+. All summer program participants received offers to return to the firm either as 2Ls or as first-year associates. Thompson Hine’s 2L Diversity Scholarship is just one example of the firm’s commitment to creating and promoting initiatives to fuel the pipeline of talented diverse lawyers.
