Date: August 19, 2013

CLEVELAND - August 19, 2013 - Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce the firm has again been recognized in LMG Life Sciences, published by the Legal Media Group in association with Euromoney Institutional Investor. The firm is recommended in the areas of Patent Strategy and Management and Product Liability, and six partners are listed as Life Sciences Stars, recommended consistently as reputable and effective in serving the industry.

Award recipients were selected by LMG Life Sciences based on research involving feedback from clients within the industry and nearly 1,000 interviews and surveys by partners active in the United States, as well as a review of public information. According to the publication, this qualitative process of peer opinion, market feedback and independent research led to the selection of the "highest profile, most sought-after and best attorneys working in life sciences."

The Thompson Hine partners recognized as Life Sciences Stars are:

  • " Finance & Transactional - Faith Charles and Garrett D. Evers (New York).
  • " Intellectual Property - John W. Ryan (Washington, D.C.). LMG notes that competitors praise Ryan's knowledge of patent law and client relationships, with companies such as Johnson and Johnson. LMG also notes that he was lead counsel for the Biotechnology Industry Organization in an amicus curiae brief filed in an appeal to the U.S. Court of the Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Akamai Technology v. Limelight Networks, Inc., in which the Federal Circuit ruled that a "single entity" need not perform all the steps in order to find patent infringement.
  • " Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement - Fern P. O'Brian (Washington, D.C.) and Elizabeth B. Wright and Brian A. Troyer (Cleveland). LMG notes that "Thompson Hine is used to handle some of the industry's most decorated product liability cases." LMG also notes that O'Brian is helping the firm become a mainstay in the life sciences product liability marketplace, having served as counsel for Wyeth in its Fen-Phen diet drug litigation. The publication quotes a source as saying, "It is well-documented how good she is in a courtroom, but she is also very adept at helping clients navigate any product-related issues before it reaches trial stage."

LMG Life Sciences strives to be the ultimate resource for in-house counsel identifying leading lawyers and firms in areas that play important roles in guiding a product through its life cycle.

Thompson Hine's Life Sciences group incorporates lawyers from practice groups across the firm, providing a multidisciplinary effort serving biotechnology, medical device and pharmaceutical companies; venture capital firms; investment banks; and research institutions. "Lawyers in a multitude of areas of law across various offices have been listed as Life Sciences Stars - a recognition that is reflective of the firm's experience in life sciences," said New York-based partner Faith L. Charles, chair of the firm's Life Sciences Group.
